Massachusetts-based Smith & Wesson on Wednesday introduced their new 12+1 capacity 9mm M&P M2.0 Subcompact pistol to the handgun market.

The latest in the company’s M2.0 line, the Subcompact follows in the wake of the Compact and Compact 3.6 which have been introduced in the last year. Like the Compact 3.6, the Subcompact uses a 3.6-inch barrel length but is about a quarter-inch shorter overall. Unlike the 15+1 9mm capacity Compact 3.6, the new Subcompact, being shorter, has a 12+1 standard magazine capacity due to its shorter, and thus more concealable, height. Fundamentally, it is the next generation of Big Blue’s M&P9C.

“As the M&P M2.0 pistol series has continued to expand, we have worked to introduce pistols that fit a variety of different needs: from professional use, to recreational shooting, to home defense, to concealed carry,” said Jan Mladek, General Manager of Smith & Wesson and M&P brands. “The M&P M2.0 Subcompact is designed for every day carry – its shorter frame makes it more concealable while still maintaining a higher double-stack magazine capacity.”

Standard features on the Subcompact include a low bore axis, an 18-degree grip angle for natural point of aim, four interchangeable palmswell grip inserts, Armornite finish and an extended rigid embedded stainless steel chassis that reduces flex and torque when firing. Weight, unloaded, is 25-ounces, putting it slightly heavier than either the 10+1 capacity Glock G26 and G43X.

The good news is, for fans of the platform who want a manual thumb safety, Smith has you covered with a variant of the Subcompact that comes with that feature. Likewise, the gun is also offered in a 10+1 .40S&W and 8+1 .45ACP chambering.

MSRP is $569 across the board for all six variants between the three caliber choices multiplied by the options with and without the thumb safety.
